Upperclassmen Clean up Trash after Football Game

Walkersville won last Friday’s football game in a smash! But the highlight of the night happened once the game was over. When the game ended, a handful of upperclassmen stayed to clean up the trash from the bleachers. This action speaks louder than any of the cheering or airhorns.

These students are members of the Blue and Gold Committee. They quickly cleaned up dozens of soda bottles, and a sea of candy wrappers.

“We made the mess, so we’ve got to clean it up. We tried to get everyone to help, but not everyone did,” senior Destiny Simms admits.

“With the trash notices on social media and everything, we thought that it was rude that everyone knows about that and still couldn’t pick up their trash. We are the student leaders, and so we set the example,” senior Gwen Ringrose shared.

At any school, it is important for upperclassmen to be aware of their actions. The school and community look up to the upperclassmen, especially at events like these.

“It is important that upperclassmen set an example. Especially the people at the front at the football games, because everyone is looking at them,” Simms stated.

“Absolutely, without a doubt. Our upperclassmen set the tone for that year. If they are involved in school, and are respectful, and wanting to be involved in different events, then the following class will do the same. It makes me very proud,” Counselor Susan Nash shares.

“They should only have to display this example for a game or two, and then the other classmen should assume that responsibility,” Principal Tracey Kibbler agrees.

In a larger sense, cleaning up the trash not only helps our school, but the entire community as well. Debris left from the game can end up in the Glade Valley Watershed, leading all the way to the Chesapeake Bay and even Atlantic Ocean.

Some students think Walkersville could do better not just at the football games, but at school as well. “I wish we could have recycling bins that actually recycle,” senior Ishani Tewari remarks.

Football games can be crazy, and hectic, but it is uplifting to see that the actions of these students can set a positive tone. While playing Seneca Valley this Friday, we hope that the football team, as well as the student section can continue the winning streak.
